All of the art work and collectibles being sold by Adams-Byrd Fine Art & Antiques have been collected and selected one at a time by the proprietor, an art historian with many years of training and experience in university art history departments, museums, galleries, and historic sites both in the U.S. and abroad. The business has been based in the Washington, D.C. area for many years. The art and collectibles that we are offering to buyers are special and unique pieces that have been carefully “curated” by us.

Thisfabulous art pottery piece by the iconic design team DESIGN COMPLEX can bedisplayed as a whimsical sculpture or art object ---- or used as an arty pieceof doll house size furniture --- displayed on the tile / floor (by Bynum andFrideaux) that we are also selling on . This is a rare opportunity topurchase a unique art pottery masterpiece by these legendary artists – whoexhibited together for thirty years, starting with the American Craft Councilshow in Rhinebeck, New York in 1978.

Thiswonderful piece was made by Kay Hays Bynum (1946-2009) and her husband RichardFriedeaux. The following isinformation that they posted on their ABOUT ME page (kayplex) on severalyears ago:

The Design Complex Frideaux-BynumDesigns helped change surface design in the art world of the last quarter ofthe twentieth century. Before the Memphis Group there was the Design Complex.Our first show together was with the American Craft Council in Rhinebeck, N.Y.in 1978. Thischarming art pottery floral black couch is about 4 ½” x 2 ¼” x 2 ½” (deep frontto back). It has two attachedpottery “pillows”; one is square and light blue, and the other is round andlight pink. The flowers on theblack couch “upholstery” are pink, mauve and blue.

On thebottom, this craft art is signed by hand (in pink) ----

This potteryart is in good condition ---- with the exception of some “issues” with thecouch’s four round feet. We thinkthat originally the couch (with the four feet ---- but not including thepillows) was fired as one piece --- but we are not totally sure. It looks to us like the feet wereeither broken and reattached ---- or perhaps they were fired separately andthen attached. With these “feet”issues, we are pricing the couch lower than we had originally planned.

This artpottery is handmade, so you will find (upon very close inspection) some surfaceirregularities that are from the process of making, glazing and firing thepottery. There are also some veryslight rubs / scratches / wear that may be from the creative process --- orfrom handling / wear in the decades since it was made.

Since the coordinating pieces (that we are selling individually) have more information with the signatures, we are using them to date this charming couch. If the 87 signed on the other pieces is the year 1987, then these art pottery sculptures are 25 years old! We found an explanation of the CO 19318 (that is on some of the other coordinating pieces) in the text with a photo of a teapot posted by the artists decades (written sometime after the 2004 opening of the museum mentioned) later:

Each piece is signed Design Complex Frideaux Bynum and TSA-LA-GI which is CHEROKEE in the Cherokee Language. Kay \'s Headright Number CO 19318 is signed on each piece. From Kay\'s Aunts to our grandson Cherokee is spoken. Our grandson marched in the opening of the New Native American Museum in Washington and sang in Cherokee at the Opening and at the Lincoln Monument.
We make a variety of pieces including serving platters, bowls, entire dinner sets, oven safe baking dishes, unusual serving accessories at surprisingly reasonable prices.\"
