The business has been based in the Washington, D.C. area for many years. The art and collectibles that we are offering to buyers are special and unique pieces that have been carefully “curated” by us.

Thisfabulous art pottery piece by the iconic design team DESIGN COMPLEX can bedisplayed as a whimsical sculpture or art object ---- or used as an arty pieceof doll house size furniture --- displayed on the tile / floor (by Bynum andFrideaux) that we are also selling on . This is a rare opportunity topurchase a unique art pottery masterpiece by these legendary artists – whoexhibited together for thirty years, starting with the American Craft Councilshow in Rhinebeck, New York in 1978.

[[Checkout our other listing for a large -- 9 ½” square and ¾” deep – tile that can beused as the floor (a base) for the coordinating furniture. On the tile, the beautiful pink floralfringed “rug” is contrasted with a geometric black and white grid (a tilefloor?). The design of the rug includesa lot of “texture” in the details.]]

Thiswonderful piece was made by Kay Hays Bynum (1946-2009) and her husband RichardFriedeaux. The following isinformation that they posted on their ABOUT ME page (kayplex) on severalyears ago:

Retro-Punk-Deco The Indian Potter and the CowboyArtist

The Las Vegas Gambler and the Cherokee Potter met under such strangecircumstances you\'ll have to wait until the book comes out to read our story.Thirty-five years later from New York City to Arkansas we are still making ourart together in everyday life and business. The Design Complex Frideaux-BynumDesigns helped change surface design in the art world of the last quarter ofthe twentieth century. Before the Memphis Group there was the Design Complex. Our first show together was with the American Craft Council in Rhinebeck, N.Y.in 1978. The New York International Gift Show\'s Handmade In America, the NewYork F.A.E., the N.Y. Boutique Show, the Lincoln Center, Washington Square, theArmory, N.Y.C., all A.C.C. Shows for the next thirty years have been part ofour history.

Our Pottery has been featured in many magazines, movies, T.V. shows andreplicated (knocked-off) by artist as big as Jun Kaneko and as small as yourlocal gift shop imports. Our art has influenced generations of artist who maynever know we existed except for the archives of the American Craft Council andthe Museum of Art and Design, N.Y.C. Kay Hays Bynum\'s Poetry has been publishedin the Village Voice, N.Y.C., and other literary publications. RichardFrideaux\'s Art is so sought after each year he sells out all originals. He doesnot do so-called \"prints.\" From our years living in Rhode Island, NewYork City, Pennsylvania, and Arkansas (soon to move to Oklahoma) we havecollected antiques for thirty years and now offer them a few at a time on as \"kayplex\". Please visit often. Welcome to our HAPPY WORLD!

This charmingart pottery black and pink polka dot oversize upholstered arm chair is about 3”x 1 ½” x 2 1/2” (deep front to back). It is missing what was an attached pottery “pillow” (check out our otherlisting for a coordinating couch to see what the artists’ pillows look like).

On thebottom, this craft art is signed by hand (in pink) ----

KayBynum Frideaux C0 19318-87

This potteryart is in good condition ---- with the exception of the missing pillow (andthere is some residue --- glue ?? --- on the chair where the pillow had oncebeen attached ---- but we have not attempted to remove the residue).

This artpottery is handmade, so you will find (upon very close inspection) some surfaceirregularities that are from the process of making, glazing and firing thepottery. There are also some veryslight rubs / scratches / wear that may be from the creative process --- orfrom handling / wear in the decades since it was made.

If the 87 signed on the piece is the year 1987, then this art pottery sculpture is 25 years old! We found an explanation of the CO 19318 in the text with a photo of a teapot posted by the artists decades (written sometime after the 2004 opening of the museum mentioned) later:

\"Signature Tea Pot and Lid with lock

Each piece is signed Design Complex Frideaux Bynum and TSA-LA-GI which is CHEROKEE in the Cherokee Language. Kay \'s Headright Number CO 19318 is signed on each piece. From Kay\'s Aunts to our grandson Cherokee is spoken. Our grandson marched in the opening of the New Native American Museum in Washington and sang in Cherokee at the Opening and at the Lincoln Monument.
We make a variety of pieces including serving platters, bowls, entire dinner sets, oven safe baking dishes, unusual serving accessories at surprisingly reasonable prices.\"

********** Be sure to look for our other listingsof coordinating sculpture / doll size furniture by Bynum and Frideaux ---- andalso the tile / stand / floor on which the furniture can be displayed.
