Source of soapstone:
Tukarak Island is the locaiton of the ‘old’ soapstone mine which is the main source of material for most carvers. It varies from light green through to black and dark brown. Isaac , if given an opportunity, likes to choose material that carries a vein of quartz which makes working the carving more difficult because of the differential hardnesses.
Art:
Although young, he is probably the most productive carver in town and he is a true artist, producing material that is not simply repetitive, but inculcates a theme or concept. He works with an axe, hacksaw and file to rough out the carving, but often uses electric tools for fine detail.
Isaac is well known to collectors across Canada and the USA and art dealers have knowledge of his work.

Selections from the booklet Canadian Inuit Sculpture - Indian and Northern Affairs Canada
Carvings from Sanikiluaq, situated in the Belcher Islands in Hudson Bay, are very popular with both art collectors and tourists.
...but it is the representations of the Arctic wildlife of the islands, particularly birds and marine mammals, that have made the art of this community so eagerly sought after. They also derive much of their popularity from the argillite stone which ranges from light green to almost black, often has a distinctive striped grain, and takes a beautiful polish.
Although the generic term soapstone is commonly used, this is a bit misleading. Soapstone, a soft talc steatite, is not used nearly as much as the harder serpentine, serpentinite, siltstone, argillite, dolomite, quartz and other types.
Materials are often in short supply, and artists must travel great distances overland or by boat to quarry quantities of good quality stone.
