You are offered a breath-taking vintage Japanese furisode kimono. It is difficult to show the beauty of this item in just 12 photos so please take a look at all the images and ask me if you want me to send more photos. This kind of kimono when new costs hundreds of pounds.

This is one of those kimonos that looks much better in real life than in photos.

The base silk is high quality, smooth lustrous, glossy silk. It has a very fine woven texture of fine random mesh which catches the light and adds beauty. It has a nice heavy drape and a glossy, slinky, soft feel.

The pattern is breathtaking and highly complex. The main motifs traditional floral and botanical motifs set in swathes or arches that flow over the whole kimono.

There are many of the popular Japanese botanical motifs including maple and bamboo leaves, , chrysanthemums, peony and bellflowers. The bamboo leaves are predominantly white on a pink/peach ground. The maple leaves and bell flowers coloured are white, grey-blue, and pale green. The chrysanthemums and peony flowers are in deep and graduated multicolours of red, blue, white, pale yellow, peach-pink, with leaves in various shades of green.

The large red peonies on the front skirt are embroidered with gold couching embroidery.

There is a lot of gold paint outlining to the whole design which adds a lot of richness and interest to the eye.

You can tell the high quality of the piece because the design flowers over the seams uninterrupted which is quite a skilful design and sewing process. There is also a shop label in the front lapel which my Japanese friend tells me says the shop name, \"Tanakaya\" and also \'utsukushi Kimono\' which means \'beautiful kimono\'

The lining of the kimono very typical. There is fine, glossy ivory silk in the upper body and sleeve. The lower skirt and cuff are lined with fine ivory silk crepe with a pale orange border.

AGE & CONDITION This furisode probably dates from the 1970s -1990s.The condition is vintage excellent –meaning it in in overall great shape with no significant faults. On very close inspection there are two faint marks, one on the shoulder and one on the lower sleeve corner. There is mild yellowing in the lining of the body. It is very slightly musty which should air out.

So this is a vintage kimono in overall excellent shape with no obvious faults but it does have some age, so please do not expect it to look quite like new.

SIZE: It is a typical size for a kimono of this sort and date. Cuff to cuff width is 130cm/51” wide and the entire length is 156cm/61.5inches, width across the back side seam to side seam is 23.5\"/60cm, sleeve drop length is 43\"/109cm. It is a heavy weight at about 1.3kg/2.85lbs. The heavy weight and value are reflected in the postage costs.

FURISODE - Furisode are long sleeved kimono worn by unmarried women at formal occasions. Furisode means \'swinging sleeve\' which is considered to be alluring.

Due to the magnificent beauty of the elaborate work in these kimonos, they make a very dramatic display as a wall hanging.

A NOTE ABOUT POSTAGE, the postage costs reflect the high weight and value of the item and the need for additional insurance cover.

WHY CAN SOME WOMEN\'S KIMONO BE SO LONG? Formal and contemporary kimono can be very long indeed. This is because they are traditionally shortened by hitching up at the waist and hiding the excess fabric behind the wide obi belt. (I can send instructions on how to do this if you want them). If you want to shorten a long kimono for ease of use then of course it can be hemmed up in the normal way.
