Approx 3\" in diameter and almost 3 oz this bronze Inauguration medal is huge and in great shape. It does have some discoloration due to age but overall in great condition with a nice patina. The obverse side reads Rutherford B. Hayes with a 3D relief raised bust of the president. And Presidential Inauguration Medal. On the bottom of the neck is marked \"Morgan\" who sculpted the bust. This is the same US Mint Assistant Engraver, George T. Morgan famous for the Morgan Silver Dollar. On the reverse is written inaugurated March 5 1877 President of the United States and surrounded by laurel leaves. Hayes was the 19th President serving after Ulysses S. Grant from 1877-1881. He was from Ohio and served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was wounded 5 times in combat and eventually promoted to Major General. Great piece with lots of history and makes a great display piece.
