Up for your consideration is a fabulous, gently usedpiece.

The A mark backstamp was used between 1939 and 1955 according to Kovel ( The Kovels’ Illustrated Price Guide to Royal Doulton.,1980). According to Mullins and Fastenau
(A Century of Royal Doulton Character & Toby Jugs, 2008) the date was 1939-1956.

John Barleycorn, an enduring symbol for brewers, was the first of the Royal Doulton character jugs to be introduced. Designed by Charles Noke, it was withdrawn from production in 1960.

Noke was famed for contorting his character’s faces to add personality.

This jug has “John Barleycorn, Old Lad” incised and under the glaze on the back.
