This white medal token or medal is just shy of 1.25\" across, and is in pretty nice shape for being over 135 years old. It shows former democratic Governor of New York Samuel Tilden,the losing Presidential candidate who came the closest to winning the White House before Al Gore in 2000. Tilden had beaten Hayes in the popular vote but, because of shenanigans, several state\'s electoral votes became unclear. So the election got thrown into the U.S. House of Representatives which created a bi-partisan commissionthat eventually gave the contested votes to Hayes just before the March 4th 1877Inauguration. Tilden evidently came to reception in Manhattan on June 12, 1877, and this token was the result - mocking both \"Sammy the Shammy\" and his words, so much so that the democratic party supposedly had died in the 60th year after its formation under Andrew Jackson. This is a classic political item which surfaces so rarely thatthis is the first time we\'ve been able to offer it for sale in30 years in the hobby.
