Excerpt from Foreword:This book is written for and dedicated to those railroaders who have run, fired or just appreciated the living mechanical wonder that was the steam locomotive when it ruled the rails of the United States and Canada. As the memory of their dominance on the railroad scene fades, we hope to arrest it just a little with the preservation of these photographs. Unfortunately, space prohibits us from including the near-famous along with some of the better known types. The lowly switcher and local freight engine get short shrift, and we are sorry that we could not include as well a number of locomotives of other roads which were well known for their great accomplishments.
