Here we have aFantastic Rare 19thC 1896 Enamel Imperial Russian Khodynka Mourning Cup Sorrows, A Scarce and interesting cup with a sad story, there is a bit of damage and in places the enamel has come off as can be seen or its taken some dints, but overall still a very pretty cup with a lot of history, these enamel cups were given out during the celebrations of the coronation of Tzar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna in 1896. The cup bears the cyphers of Nicholas and Alexandra surrounded by a geometric pattern with the Romanov eagle on the opposite side. On the morning of 18th May 1896 over half a million people gathered on a ragged field in moscow, the cups were supposed to be given out as a gift but a rumor in the crowd was spread that there was a gold coin in the cup, Thousands piled through to get a cup and as a result over thousand people were trampled to death, would be perfect for imperial russian collectors, museum, display, antiques dealers, rare enamel collectors and much much more!
