Antique pottery in good taste – harmic.little A very rare and extremely desirable Westerwald salt glazed stoneware \'GR\' tankard or mug with a superb star-shaped medallion on the front; with original pewter lid; impressed capacity mark \'10\' on the back near the handle; Westerwald, Germany, circa 1720.   This is a very desirable item for anyone who loves to collect Westerwald salt glaze stoneware. I don\'t ever remember having or even seeing a No. 10 capacity tankard before. It is tiny, measuring only 3 5/8 inches tall to the top of the pewter lid, and holding just one gill of liquid.  In addition to the wonderfully cute small size, there are a number of features of interest including the fine medallion on the front, which was possibly copied from the English chivalric Order of the Garter and which the Hanoverian dynasty would have seen as a valuable visual propaganda instrument for their new royal dynasty to provide continuity with the past. The medallion is a complex star shape with the GR cypher located in the middle.  The pewter lid has an inscription incised on the inside, which was probably made by a previous owner. There are illegible numbers and letters.  The body is incised on the sides with what looks like a variant of the Chinese prunus design with fat buds on stems. The back, near the top of the handle, has an incised \'No.10\' capacity mark which signifies a liquid capacity of one gill (see photos).  The condition is superb apart from a faint hairline on the front reaching down from the rim about 1 1/2\" - visible in photos. There is also a faint and short hairline in the bottom. It is completely tight and secure. There are no chips or restoration.  A remarkable and beautiful little mug which would be a fantastic addition to your collection ifyou are lacking the smallest size of Westerwald. This is a KEEPER! Good luck!    Insurance is included with shipping. Absolutely guaranteed authentic.
