A fabulous, rare,19th century,gilt bronze sculpture of a Hibou (Hunting Owl), withexquisite surface detail, raised on amottled marble and black feltplinth, signed Barye with the FBarbedienne foundry mark. This model of the owl with a mouse/rat is one of Barye\'s earliest animal sculptures created in the late 1820\'s. The owl sits perched on top of a single boulder with its prey, a mouse/rat, clutched in its talons. Barye has captured the full detail of the owl\'s feathers,with its outstretched wings frozen in the moment of flight.

Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810–1892) ....

AFrench metalworker and manufacturer, who was well known as a bronze founder.The F. Barbedienne foundry was started in Paris in 1838 by Ferdinand Barbedienne and Achille Collas, whoinvented a machine that could mechanically reduce statues.In 1843 they startedproducingworksfor Francois Rude. They barely survived the revolution and financial collapse of 1848 which caused many artists and foundries to declare bankruptcy. Barbedienne actively pursued contracts with the many sculptors of Paris contracting with David D\'Angers, Jean-Baptiste Clesinger, and even producing some casts for Antoine Louis Barye.

Antoine-Louis Barye (1796–1875) ....

A french sculpter most famous for his work as an animalier, a sculptor of animals.Barye began his career as a goldsmith working withhis father, but around 1810 he started worked under the sculptor Guillaume-Mertin Biennais, who was a goldsmith to Napoleon.In 1818 he wasadmitted to the E\'cole des Beaux Arts.In 1819, while he was studying at the École des Beaux-Arts, Barye sculpted a medallion named Milo of Crotana Devoured by a Lion. Milo\'s theme was the school\'s official theme for the medallion competition of 1819.

Barye was no less successful in sculpture on a small scale, and excelled in representing animals in their most familiar attitudes. Examples of his larger work include the Lion of the Column of July,cast in 1839, various lions and tigers in the gardens of the Tuileries.In 1852, he cast his bronze Jaguar devouring a hare. Fame came late in the sculptor\'s life. He was made Professor of Drawings at the Museum of Natural History in 1854, and was elected to the Academie des beaux-arts in 1868. No new works were produced by Barye after 1869. There is a public square on the Eastern tip of lle Saint-Louisin Paris that is dedicated to him and todaymost of Antoine Louis Barye\'s plasters and models are the property of the Louvre in Paris.
