The Immaculate Conception, 18th 19th Century
Fine 18th 19th century Immaculate Conception of the Virgin, oil on canvas. Fine 18th or 19th century depiction of the Virgin wearing white and blue, with her hands crossed on her bosom. There is a clear ascending impulse that is very Baroque. Mary is situated in a heavenly space inhabited by light, clouds and angels that serves to join two iconographic traditions: that of the Immaculate Conception itself, and that of the Ascension. This work derives from Murillo’s famous masterpiece held in the Museo del Prado Madrid, The Immaculate Conception of Los Venerables (or The Soult Immaculate Conception) painted circa 1678.
The subject has been heavily depicted but the present example stands out in terms of quality and precision. Note the very finely detailed face and glistening eyes, the beautiful warm palette, the fluffy, cotton-candy like clouds, the puttis, and the overall softness and sweetness of expression. Ready to hang in its beautiful 19th century ornate frame.
Very good relined condition and with a lovely old age craquelure, vibrant colour.

Esteban Murillo (1618-1682) was one of Spain’s greatest Baroque artist. He was influenced by Rubens and created many famous works of which religious themes dominate his oeuvre by far. His innumerable representations of the Virgin Mary, the Holy Family, and various scenes from the Bible and the lives of the saints are notable for their intimate, domestic sweetness, so distinct from Zurbarán\'s severe, ascetic piety. Murillo may have painted more versions of the Immaculate Conception than any other artist. The doctrine of the Immaculate Conception held that the Virgin Mary, as the mother of Christ, was completely pure and born without original sin. This doctrine had existed since the Middle Ages but wasn\'t officially accepted in Church doctrine until the 19th century, and Seville was the European center of agitation for those fighting for this belief. This theme was thus particularly popular amongst Sevillian artists.
