This item measures just under 5 1/2\" long x 2 3/4\" across
Beautifully and extensively carved in high relief, this coconut depicts what appears to be a wealthy family which is engaged in the agricultural business.The central panel features a well-dressed man on horseback raising a glass, and a beautiful woman gesturing to him from an adjacent panel. Also depicted are individuals (perhaps the children?) who are engaged in harvesting fruit. Considering both the Folk Art aspect, and the detailed historical depictions, this piece representsan interesting and high quality document of Mexican folk history and culture
According to the prior owner, who was the descendant of an American Diplomat, this item was reportedly a gift to a dignitaryvisiting Mexicoback in the early 20th C. the presumption was that it was already old when it was gifted. While the story is nice, it is verbal history which is not supported by any document (not that there necessarily ever would have been any document...)
The Bank has extensive inlay in various colored materials and mother of pearl. Some areas are missing their inlay, and it appears that the eyes have also been lost to time. Please see photos for views of every surface.
