ITEM DESCRIPTION
Item Description
Up for your consideration is a very fine and rare Chinese Qingbai porcelain bowl, dating from the southern Song period, c. 1100 - 1200 AD. The bowl (wan) in the Form of a Plum Blossom with 6 eggshell-thin lobes, a light blue/green, and an incised interior featuring clouds. The bowl measures 8\" in diameter, and about 3\" tall. The glaze on this piece is more light blue-ish (highly desired), than it is green. The underside is unglazed. I have included a close-up of the glaze, which shows its fine crystalline structure, an important and unique aspect to this important glaze.
The bowl is in excellent condition, about as nice as you are likely to find. There are typical manufacturing issues, such as afiring flaw to interior center, and minor pitting to glaze. Also, there are 2 petals with very tight hairlines, one approx. 1 1/2\" the other approx. 1\" (as shown in the last two photos, one is very faint). This is inherent when this type of potteryages, as the walls of the upper portion are so thin. When tapped, the bowl rings true.
TheNanhai shipwreckwas found with many of these wares, and dated them to the early southern Song period. It carried a certain quantity of Jingdezhen fine qingbai wares, such as the piece offered here. The bowls and dishes are thinly potted with forms inspired by silver wares.
