We are offering for sale an excellent London-made silver vinaigrette.

Most vinaigrettes were made in Birmingham, but the earliest tended to be London-made. The exterior of this fine Georgian box is plain with the engraved initials of the original owner to the top. Opening the the box reveals a gilt (gold-wash) interior and prettily engraved and pierced hinged grille. Not shown in the photos, but we have the old sponge for the lower compartment that will be included with the vinaigrette.

Vinaigrettes were carried by the wealthy of 19th century England to safeguard them against the pungent smells of the city streets. A sponge was soaked in sweet smelling perfumes and held below the grille. The owner could then lift open the box cover to smell the perfumes when particularly noxious smells were about.

The vinaigrette is in fine condition throughout with two good hinges and appropriate hallmarks to the base and cover.
