Fine Old Northwest Coast Indian Cedar Totem Pole 21\" Nuu-Chah-Nulth Tlingit RARE:
$325.00

We are offering a rare fine old Northwest Coast NativeAmerican cedar totem pole. Dating tothe 1920s, this 21\" totem has a beautifully carved series of sevenfigures: raven, man holding a frog, frog, mink, raven, killer whale, and a Kingof All Birds painted in black, red, and green. It has a rich dark patina, with deeply carved figures. Unlike most carved totem poles this one isidentified, being modeled on the one erected in Seattle’s Pioneer Square. According to a Burke Museum blog entry on class=\"MsoNormal\">“The Tlingit pole standing in Pioneer Square was acquiredin 1899 by a group of Seattle businessmen who took a trip to Southeast Alaskaand stopped in the Tlingit village of Tongass. They assumed that the villagehad been abandoned and proceeded to remove a large pole that was taken back toSeattle and erected in Pioneer Square. In fact, the Tongass people were justaway at their fishing camps, and when they returned, they were unhappy to findthe pole stolen. The thieves had been observed and their actions were reportedto Governor Brady in Alaska. The Tongass people asked for the return of thepole or payment for it. After lengthy negotiations, a payment was made, but thepole remained in Seattle. This pole was damaged by fire in Pioneer Square in1938, and a replica was carved by a group of Tlingit carvers from Ketchikan aspart of a Civilian Conservation Corps project. This replica pole still standsin Pioneer Square in Seattle today.”

While the originalpole was the work of Tlingit carvers in Alaska, model totem poles such as thisone were most likely carved by members of the Nuu-chal-nulth (formerlycalled Nootka) cultural group living in Seattle, for sale to tourists in the city. There are minor scuffs andwear typical of totems of this age, and the beak is missing from the raven attop – a common loss for large totems such as this one. The back has \"Replica of Seattle Totem\" written in pencil, and the stamp \"REAL INDIAN MADE.\" Since the mid-19th century, carved modeltotem poles have been a popular trade item between Indigenous craftsmen andEuro-Americans working along and visiting the coast of the Pacific Northwestfrom Alaska down to Seattle. The mastercarvers who made the iconic full-size totems towering over Native and FirstNations villages also made these smaller ones for sale or trade. This totem measures 21 1/8\" tall, 11/4\" wide, and 2 1/4\" deep. Most souvenir totems were 12\" or smaller, so this larger size makesit rarer and guaranteed to stand out wherever you display it as askillfully-carved example of early 20th-century Northwest Coast art!
