Up for sale is a well crafted vintage Gullah sweetgrass basket, woven in the middle years of the past century. This basket is formed in a round shape, with a matching round lid and two little handles on the sides. When you visit the market in Charleston, you can still see the ladies selling their baskets of all shapes and sizes. This basket was made of the traditional sweetgrass bound with the traditional palmetto binding. There are also pineneedle accents decorating the lid, the sides, and on the underside - a generous use of pine needles in this one! It would have been intended for use as a sewing basket or a basket to hold personal items. The basket is old enough that the palmetto wraps have lost their greenish color and have turned almost the same shade as the sweetgrass coils - I would put its age as from the 1950\'s or 1960\'s. This is a nice and finely woven basket which makes a very attractive piece for use or display.

The basket is a nice medium-large size, measuring 8\" across at the widest part on the rounded sides (10½\" from handle to handle), and 6\" deep to the top of the slightly rounded lid. The basket is in outstanding condition with no breaks, no missing palmetto wraps, nor any other damage whatever. Both of the little wrapped side handles are still firmly attached at all points. This is a lovely example of innovative American folk art weaving and will make a beautiful addition to someone\'s collection of vintage Southern Gullah folk art baskets.
