VINTAGE WOVEN YAM MASK

Presenting a superb woven fibre yam mask crafted by the
Abelam people of the East Sepik region of Papua New Guinea.

This mask has been tightly woven from fibrous rattan grasses
and beautifully coloured with natural clay pigments.

This appealing piece has an oval shape, with woven crown and protruding
nose ridge. Large circular eyes coloured with red pigment are contained
within white coloured ovals creating a bold and dynamic design.

Yam masks are an essential part of the yam
harvest ceremonies held by the Abelam people.

This fine example is presented in excellent vintage condition
with no breaks or losses. The weaving remains strong and tight
and is coloured with and a very good quantity of original pigment.

This impressive yam mask measures approx 33cms in height x 23.5cms in width.

This exceptional example would make an oustanding
addition to any Papua New Guinea, Sepik, Pacific
