This hand sample of gold ore was collected with the mine owners permission at the Border Peaks mining area, Northwest Cascades, Washington State. The sample contains fine gold disseminated into a mixture of tellurium and bismuth, the mineral tellurobismuthite, as well as pyrrhotite, quartz, and other accessory minerals. Gold has been mined in this area since the mid- to late-1800\'s from veins of quartz which intrude metamorphic rocks of late Mesozoic age. This sample represents a classic example of the ore processed from mines in this area.
