Finest Deeply Carved Victorian Cameoc1860Stunning Depicting Hebe Feeding the Eagle of Zeus
This is anextremely fine Victorian Cameo Brooch c1860 of \'Museum Quality\' depicting Hebe feeding the Eagle of Zeus(please see the detailed close-upphotographs provided, which form an integral part of the item\'s description).
Thissubject is rare because the depiction of Hebe is unusual and the depth & quality of the carving is simply sublime. Indeed the carving is more thanperfect in every detail and the delicacy of this piece is trulyamazing.
In the Cameo Hebe wears an ethereal dress with each fold captured by the skill of the carver; similarly if we look at the eagle, every feather is carved wonderfully and the way that Hebe\'s head nestles under the deeply carved Eagle\'s wing creating a \'3D\' effect is masterful.
Further down the Cameo the perfect way the clouds have been captured by the carver is truly amazing, note how Hebe\'s dress disappears into the cloud. The shell is perfect, with no lines visible atall making it avery desirable collectors piece, rare and museum quality cameo.
The Cameo is mounted in it\'s original Pinchbeck frame, which shows a number of dings, solder repairs and some loss of decoration, but it is all original and has it\'s original hinge, pin & \'C\' clasp (although evidence of historic repairs). The Cameo itself is secure but loose in the mount and in view of the wear to the mount it is remarkable that it has survived in perfect condition. However, it has and theCameo is amazing, with everything carved sorealistically as shown. This is undoubtedly one of most beautiful cameos I have ever seen and it would grace any collection.

History of Hebe & the Eagle of ZeusIn Greek mythology, Hebe is the goddess of youth (Romanequivalent: Juventas). She is the daughter of Zeus and Hera. Hebe was thecup-bearerfor the gods and goddesses of Mount Olympus, serving their nectar and ambrosia, until she was married to Herakles (Roman equivalent: Hercules); her successorwas the young Trojan prince Ganymede. Another title of hers, for this reason,is \"Ganymeda.\" She also drew baths for Ares and helped Hera enter herchariot. Hebe had two children with her husband Heracles: Alexiares andAnicetus. The name Hebe comes from a Greek word meaning \"youth\" or\"prime of life\".Juventaslikewise means \"youth\", ascan be seen in such derivatives as juvenile. In art, Hebe is usually depictedwearing a sleeveless dress. There is a statue of Hebe, by Robert Thomas 1966 inBirmingham city centre, England.Antonio Canova also sculpted four different statues of Hebe: one of them is inthe Museum of Forlì, in Italy.
In summary, this museum quality Cameo is in crisp original condition with no damage depicting an extremely rare subject - it is quite simply sublime.
