Wonderful bookends depicting the image of a fine vase holding blossoms and fern fronds, with more fronds decorating the front and edges of the base, presented in lovely color. Titled \"Old Fashioned Flowers\" onthe back. I have seen this only once, in a single (which I own and have listed on ); otherwise, not found in reference books or on-line collections.
These are bronze-clad, whereby a skin of bronze is made to adhere to a plaster form. A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900\'s to make decorative household objects that had the look, feel and heft of solid bronze pieces yet still were affordable by the middle class.
One ofthose companies was Pompeian Bronze, operating in NYC in 19-teens and early \'20s. No maker\'s mark on this pair but the single mentioned above has a Pompeian foil label on the bottom.
Condition is fine: no breaks or chips in the cladding, just a couple of dents in edges (see pics). Paint is original, mostly intact, and still quiet eye-catching. Felts on bottoms are not original. Both pieces sit flat and stable.
7¾ inches tall; 5 inches wide; 2⅜ inches deep. And sufficiently heavy at 2 pounds, 5 ounces EACH PIECE.
