This is an unusual cover featuring the use of 5-cent and 25-cent Postage (Fractional) Currency as franking for a registered airmail letter from Sea Bright, New Jersey, to Horta, Fayal, on the Azores in August, 1939. There are also a half-dozenPortuguese stamps and 6-cent and 15-cent U.S. stamps. The letter is addressed to famed aviator Patrick J. "Pappy" Byrne, who worked with PanAm to establish some U.S.-European routes. Standard 9-1/2" x 4-1/4" format airmail envelope.

On back there are autographed signatures of Captain Byrne and five officers, presumably the flight crew of the plane transporting this cover.

Also on back is rubber-stamped authentication that this cover was once in the Franklin D. Roosevelt Collection.

This is part of a largecollection of historic checks and related fiscal paper that was accumulated by a veteran collector 25-50 years ago. Conditionis usually typical of century-old fiscal paper from dealer stock. Condition issues MAYinclude such things as minor paper splits,minor corner creases, edge and corner bumps, punch or ink cancellations, minor stains, etc., Some certificates will have a lightly penciled dealer price and/or inventory data in an upper corner or on back, as was common with dealersin the 1980s and earlier.
