This sale is for a large and fantastic 13 star Flag, measuring 29\" by 46\". It is in a frame measuring 40\" by 57\". This Flag is made of wool. It stars, stripes, and canton are all machine sewn. The stars of this Flag are sewn in a medallion formation that is much rarer than the 3-2-3-2-3 star pattern. In our experience, we tend to find around five 3-2-3-2-3 pattern Flags for every one medallion Flag (and both are tough to find). The stars of this Flag are in a very interesting starfish like shape, rather than the traditional sharper shape.
The stars are sewn into place, using a zig-zag stitch that came into use in the early 1890s. The patent for this stitching technique issued in 1892 to Mr. Henry Bowman as US 473,653. Such stitching was common beginning at this time and remained the primary stitching method for the next 50 years. One advantage of such a stitch is that the stars and anchor could be cut somewhat roughly, and then that rough cut would be hidden behind the zigs and the zags.
Given the zig-zag stitching, the wool construction, and the patina, this Flag likely dates to 1890s. We believe this to be particularly true, given the starfish like shape of the stars, which further hint to a late 19th century Flag.
This Flag was hand sewn to silk organza, and the Flag and the silk organza were both sewn to a cotton fabric. The cotton fabric was then wrapped about and hand sewn to a mounting board. The silk organza was hand sewn to the stripes and the canton of the Flag, an tedious, difficult process. However, the result is a much tighter appearance to the Flag and an incredibly strong layer of protection. Prior to the sewing processes, the fabrics were washed twice, the first time as part of a standard wash and the second time as part of a dye setting wash. This prevents the black from seeping into the Flag. The frame has a highly distressed coating, so as to match the Flag\'s age and patina. The overall conservation process is extremely time consuming and expensive, but entirely worth it, given the resulting presentation.
