sale description France 1653: Two Scenes from the Christmas Story, Very Rare 17th century prints

You are offerding on something wonderful and 350 years old! There are two excellent woodcut images, front and back, in this page from a rare 17th century French book, illustrating two scenes from the Christmas story: The circumcision of Jesus in the Temple, and the Flight into Egypt. The book from which they came is an illustrated Bible, one intended to tell the main stories of Scripture to ordinary people, in everyday French, with an illustration for each episode. The style of the pictures is mannerist, circa 1600, although this book was published a little later, in 1663. We are on the frontier here between \"fine\" art and folk/popular art.

Dimensions of the images are each about 8 inches by 6.6 inches, on a sheet of old chainlined paper measuring about 12 inches by 8.25 inches. Condition is fair, with paper toning, a little staining. and some paper loss on the lower margin. It\'s quite a beautiful and desirable item nonetheless, and a fine acquisition. Shipping cost within the U.S. will be $5.
