About this Item:

Frederick Douglass(February 1818 – February 20, 1895), prominent 19th century African-American social reformer,orator andwriter, authenticmanuscript document (DS), one page, both sides, dated February 3, 1882. After escaping fromslavery Douglassbecame a leader of theabolitionistmovement with his brilliant oratory and powerful anti-slavery writings. Douglass stood as a living counter-example to slaveholders' arguments that slaves did not have the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens.

Mortgage document detailing a loan from S. C. Harris to Mary C. Saunders in the amount of $75, listing a number of her items as collateral, including "1 bedstead hair mattress, 1 feather bed, pair of feather pillows...4 chairs, 2 reception chairs, 1 table...1 washstand, 1 bureau and Brussels carpet," signed on Docketing, "Fred'k Douglass."

Measuring approximately 8.5 x 14, this document is in very good condition, with the expected age wear, mild toning and a few separations at the edges.
