Extraordinary reproduction of a classic French First EmpireInfantryman’s shako, Model of 1810 with neck cover, unworn with gently-agedappearance, in a size 7 3/8.

To ensure maximum authenticity, shako is constructed of anarray of original nineteenth century materials, on patterns taken directly fromoriginal examples, and specifically based upon an example once housed in theClement Collection (see our photo of the hand-tinted photo-lithograph originallypublished in Margerand’s seminal work).Body is constructed of fuller’s board, lined with shellacked hempencloth, and covered with original Victorian black broadcloth. Crown and visor are of molded, enameledleather. Sweatband is of black glazedkipskin; headnet of coarse linen; and Havelock of black linen. Much of the visible stitching was executedby hand.

Trimmings are simple-yet-elegant,including enameled leather cockade with an unusual arrangement of the tricolor;white worsted wool tape “loop” depending from cockade and terminating at avintage brass button; field badge of green woolen worsted; hand-cut,leather-backed chinscales with worsted woolen tie tapes secured by five-pointedstar bosses; and enormous hand-wrapped cut-feather plume, measuring 17” free. All colors are slightly muted or faded, and brass is lightly patinated,to give the impression that this shako is a “mint original.”

The M1810 was the standard shako of the latter years of theFirst Empire, with headgear like this worn all the way to Moscow, andcontinuing in service through Waterloo. This is a very elegant example, handcrafted by America’s premierrestorer and replicator of military headgear, Cameron Laughlin. It would be difficult to find a betterChristmas present for a Napoleonic scholar or enthusiast.

SINCE PLUME AND SHAKO MUST BE SHIPPED SEPARATELY, IT ISIMPOSSIBLE TO USE THE SHIPPING CALCULATOR TO DETERMINE POSTAGE, SO . . .
