Overview: Up for sale is this beautiful original oil painting on stretched canvas by listed French artist, Jean Pierre Thenot (1803-1857). This piece depicts a bucolic rural village scene, with a road flanked by a church near a small pond. The painting is masterfully rendered and shows the work of a truly talented artist. It is a shining example of the Barbizon school of painting made famous in France in the 1800\'s. Jean Pierre Thenot is mainly known for his lithographs. This is a rarer oil painting. The piece is framed, but undated. It is truly a jewel and would make a powerful and fantastic addition to any true collector\'s gallery.

Condition: The piece is in fair to good condition, given its age,with a couple of major issues. First, as with most paintings approaching 200 years in age, it has cracquelure throuhout. Second, there are three major areas of paint loss (one to the right of the church tower, one just below the building at the shore of the pond and one just to the left of the main tree at middle-right. The paint loss in the sky and the tree is also accompanied by holes in the canvas. The hole/puncture at right is fairly large. The hole in the sky to the right of the steeple is more akin to fraying, but does come through the canvas. The frame does not appear to be original, but it is quite old (probably 1950\'s-ish) and suits the painting well, is in good condition and is ready to hang. Please see the photos. Measurements: Stretched canvas measures approximately 7.5 inches wide x 5.25 inches high. Frame measures approximately 10.25 inches wide x 8 inches high.
