These sand pillars are the result of a fascinating natural process that occurs when lightning strikes in the northern Sahara desert. With temperatures often exceding 50,000 degrees fahrenheit, these energetic bolts of lightning ground themselves by leaping from the clouds above to the surface of the desert below. Occasionally these lightning strikes carry enough electrical energy to actually fuse the desert sand into a kind of natural glass called, \"Fulgarites.\" When these small tubes of fossilized lightning are discovered by one of the nomadic Berbers or other indigenous peoples of Morocco, they can often make their way to a city, and subsequently to a collector or tourist.
