This is one of the rarest fulgurites as of today. Thisis a museum quality piece. Very rare, white with small black specks, beautiful 23\' 1 1/2\" long piece. Found in a pit in GA and dug up just like example picture #7 shown. Fulgurites this long are impossible to keep in one single piece due to how fragile they are. So just like the one found by Dr. Martin Uman\'s team in FL which specializes in lightning and has been verified as the worlds record had to be taken out in sections. This one is longer just not verified by GuinnessBook of World Records,. I do have proof of communicationfrom Dr. Uman about this fulgurite. Just understand that it would come packed in sections to equal the total length.
Fulgurites are formed when lightning strikes the ground, fusing mineral grains. The temperatures within a lightning channel are known to exceed 53540.33°. They are commonly hollow and/or branching assemblages of glassy tubes, crusts, slags, and clusters of materials that often form during the discharge phase of lightning strikes propagating into silica- rich sand mixed soil, clay, or other sediments. Most natural fulgurites fall on a spectrum from white to black, but moderate iron content can result in a deep brownish-green coloration. More colorful variants are usually synthetic and reflect incorporation of synthetic materials. The interior of Type I (sand) fulgurites normally is very smooth or lined with fine bubbles, while other types are often both vesicular and dense like; their exteriors generally can be coated with rough sedimentary particles and can be porous, smooth, or structurally complex. Branching fulgurites display fractal-like self-similarity and structural as a macroscopic or microscopic network of root-like branches. Fulgurites formed in sand or loose soil are mechanically fragile, making the field collection of large specimens difficult.
Fulgurites can exceed tens of centimeters in diameter and can penetrate deep into the soil, sometimes occurring as far as 49’ below the surface that was struck, but may form directly on appropriate sedimentary surfaces. One of the longest fulgurites to have been found and recorded in modern times was a little over 16’ in length, and was found in northern FL by Dr. Uman\'s team.
