It existed between 1871 and 1919, growing out of the smallPrussian Navy(from 1867 theNorddeutsche Bundesmarine), which primarily had the mission of coastal defence.Kaiser Wilhelm IIgreatly expanded the navy, and enlarged its mission. The key leader was AdmiralAlfred von Tirpitz, who greatly expanded the size and quality of the navy, while adopting the sea power theories of American strategistAlfred Thayer Mahan. The result was a naval arms race with Britain as the German navy grew to become one of the greatest maritime forces in the world, second only to theRoyal Navy. The German surface navy proved ineffective during World War I; its only major engagement, theBattle of Jutland, was indecisive. However, the submarine fleet was greatly expanded and posed a major threat to the British supply system. The Imperial Navy\'s main ships were turned over to the Allies, but then weresunk at Scapa Flow in 1919by German crews.

Imperial navy was from 1872 to 1918 the official name of the naval forces of the German Empire. Originally, it was focused on coastal defense out. From about 1900 it developed into one of the largest and most modern fleets in the world which has been favored by imperial ambition and the (Anglophile) Marine enthusiasm of the German Emperor Wilhelm II.. 1914 the Imperial Navy to the Royal Navy and in the United States Navy, the second most powerful navy in the world. This huge upgrade urged Britain out as a leading sea power and led to the Anglo-German naval race. It bore his part in the outbreak of the First World War.
That the fleet remained largely ineffective, especially the geopolitical situation of the German coasts and the lack of large overseas naval bases was owed. In World War II the German surface forces therefore did not play a major role. Only in the Battle of Jutland in 1916, there was a great slugfest with the Royal Navy, which ended in a strategic stalemate. The submarine warfare, however added the British Merchant Navy to serious damage, but favored by their ruthless leadership the USA entered the war on the side of Germany\'s enemies. In November 1918, led inactivity and discontent aboard the battleships - and the senseless run command - for Kiel Mutiny. He brought the November Revolution and the end of the monarchy in Germany.
In the period from 1 January 1921 to 31 May 1935 was the navy of the German Empire Imperial Navy.
