About the inspiration for this event cover :William McKinley, without a doubt, led a most accomplished life. He served his nation during all 5 years of the Civil War ( he was the last of our U.S. Presidents todo so ), he was Ohio\'s governor from 1892-96, he represented Ohio in the U.S. Congress, and he served as our nation\'s Commander-in-Chief from1896 to 1901,during which time he led our nation to victory during the Spanish-American War, and he championed the cause of workers\' rights which, many historians believe, was the main reason he was elected as a 2-term president. ( Please see \"Interesting Tidbit\" below. )

Sadly, though, just 6 months into his second term of office, President McKinley was assassinated while delivering a speech in a concert hall in Buffalo, New York. After he was sworn in to his second term of office onMarch 4, 1901, he went on a good-will tour around the country, by train, so that he could personally \"connect\" with the common-man. It was on September 6th that he was shot by an Anarchist ( the anti-government movement of the day ), and just8 days later, he died from his gunshot wounds, setting off a nation-wide state of shock and grief at the loss of such a very popular and well-loved man. His body was transported, by funeral-train, to his home state of Ohio, where he was laid to rest.

About the richly thermographed, hand painted cachet: on his superbly laid-out cachet, Mr. Goldberg salutes President McKinley by casting his prominent profile against the backdrop of a swirling and flapping American Flag.

About the special cancellations :as mentioned above, this cover was canceled on the 100 year anniversary . . . to the very exact day . . . when President McKinley passed away --- and in the New York city of Buffalo, where this nationally traumatic event took place.

About the Scarcity Factor : I purposely scanned the flip-side of this cover so that you could see, in Mr. Goldberg\'s own words, that he made only 12 of these covers, with the 1904 McKinley stamp on it.

All in all :a most distinguished piece of work.

INTERESTING TIDBIT : actually restrictive tariffs on other nations was just as contentious an issue during McKinley\'s time as it is now. It was in 1890, while serving in Congress that William McKinley drafted the Tariff Act of 1890, which raisedforeign import taxes by as much as 50%,an actwhich, according to the political ideology of the day, was meantto protect American businesses and workers from foreign competition. At the time, it was such a widely popular idea that it later greatlyhelped McKinley winboth of his terms in office.
