This a fabulous Carved Wood Helmet Four Faced Ngontang Mask from the Fang Tribal people of Gabon Africa. Ngontang means \'young white woman\'. Dances with this helmet mask were believed to protect against witchcraft. This mask represents a spirit of the dead, and visiting as a young white woman from the world beyond. The mask was used to locate sorcerers, those who misuse spiritual powers,but also danced at feasts, funerals, celebrations of birth, and on the occasion of an important communal decision. The face features have typical characteristics of the Fang, such as tribal scarification markings and arched eyebrows with highlights on the nose and cheeks. The holes around the bottom of the mask is where the costume would be attached. Fang people make up the largest tribal group.
