War date (July 1st 1864) Autographed letter signed all in the hand of Civil war union major general William B Franklin. Letter is written from Portlan Mainewhile he was recovering from wounds sufferend in the Red river campaign and trying to get command of a corps again. Letter is written to Col. Frank J. Parker who was at first was trying to help Franklin with his trial over his roll in the loss at Fredricksburg which he was famously blamed for, and then trying to secure a spot on Franklins staff. This particular letter Is written cancelling a meeting with the Colonol as he has to make a meeting WITH GENERAL GRANT. Franklin famously did this several times to use his Friendship attained at westpoint with Grant to help secure him a cnother corps command. Here is what the letter says as best as I can translate....

\"Portlain MN July 1, 1864\"

\"my dear Colonal\"

\"It is necessary for me to leave here on Monday to make a visit to General Grant. I therefore will not be able to see you here on that day. I shall think I will be absent about a week. I will be at the Revere House on Monday, arriving there about 1 o\'clock probably, though as Monday is the 4th there may be no (counting) upon trains\"

\"truely your friend, W.B. Franklin\"

\"colF.J. Parke, Boston MA\"
