I have on offer a rare bird carving from a genuine tribal house from the mentawai. A traditional house is always decorated with hanging birds. All of which are modern carved but in all my travels I found one old piece carved over 40 years ago by a shaman in training. I have included a picture of the item in situ and also a photo of the more modern ones hanging.
The bird resembles the dances made during ceremonies.
The dust has all been cleared but apart from that it\'s almost in the same condition as I found it.Measures 25cm x 22cmI\'ve recently visited the mentawai tribe. One of the last remaining traditional tribes left in indonesia. Unfortunately they are in a rapid decline with roughly 50 families remaining with only the elders actually staying and keeping with tradition. Many of the youth are moving to the ever growing modern town on the island.
The mentawai dont live in tribal villages just single family dwellings often days walk apart from each other, due to the forest elders being shamans they were needed to be scattered across the island incase they were needed when locals got sick and needed their magic. Unfortunately after indonesia recieved their independence the government went on a destroy mission to kill the local customs to incorporate them into a single indonesian culture. In the 60\'s most, if not all their art and costume was destroyed and many of their practises outlawed. Tattoos included. The mentawai have the oldest tattoo tradition in the world. Although it was a very humbling experience staying with these people and learning their ways it was also sad and quite apparent that this ancient culture will be gone within 20 years.
