An excellent example. An antique silver mounted coconut cup with scalloped decoration, bead border and standing on three decorative silver feet. Attractive carved coconut. Supplied with a blue glass liner.

Height 9.5 cms.

Diameter 8 cms.

Makers mark only IB.

Circa 1780.

Literature: Coconuts were prized in early times for their healing powers and drinking vessels were often formed from them. The coconut cup is a variety of standing cup, made and used in Europe in the 15th and 16th Century, with a revival in Georgian England. Usually they have a pedestal foot or 3 ornamental feet and are mounted in silver or Old Sheffield plate.

Condition: This charming silver mounted coconut cup is in good condition with no restoration. The silver is in very good order. The makers mark is clear. The coconut doesn’t hold water which is obviously why there is a blue glass liner. The glass is old but is unlikely to be original. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.
