(1902-1992)
Former actor George Lloyd Murphy represented California in the U.S. Senateas a Republican from1965-1971.He appeared on Broadway in the musicals, Shoot the Works (1931), the Gershwins\'Of Thee I Sing, (1932 and 1933 revival) and Jerome Kerns\'Roberta (1933-1934). Of Thee I Sing won the 1932 Pulitzer Prize in Drama.
Murphy co-starred with Shirley TempleinLittle Miss Broadway(1938), with Judy GarlandinLittle Nellie Kelly(1940), and with Fred AstaireinBroadway Melody of 1940(1940). Switching from the Democratic Party to the Republican Partyin 1939, he continued to be a close political ally of Democrat Ronald Reagan, with whom he appeared inThis Is the Army(1943).Among Murphy’s other films wereHold That Co-ed(1938),The Navy Comes Through(1942),Bataan(1943), andWalk East on Beacon(1952), his final film.He served on the Board of Directors of the Screen Actors Guild (1937-1953) and was its President (1944-1946), succeeded by Ronald Reagan (1947-1952, 1959-1960) whoswitched from theDemocraticParty to theRepublicanPartyin 1962.
In 1950, an Honorary Oscar was awarded“To George Murphy for his services in interpreting the film industry to the country at large.”
Murphy was Vice President of Desilu Studios (1958-1961), Technicolor Corp. (1961-1964). He was the director of entertainment for presidential inaugurations in 1952, 1956, and 1960. Murphy was Chairman of the Republican State Central Committee of California (1953-1954).

I was the handwriting expert contacted in the \"1775 Almanac\" episode on the PBS series \"HistoryDetectives\" which was televised on Tuesday, September 6, 2011. I was asked to identify the writer of the notes handwritten on the pages of the almanac, notes that recorded, among other events, the Battles of Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill.
The unknown owner of the almanac had used it as a diary. Filmed in the Library of Congress, I compared the writing in the almanac with a signed letter handwritten in 1779. --- Herman Darvick
