German 18th century snuffbox made from gilded silver with horn relief inlaid on the outward side of its lid. The relief is decorated with Rococo pattern and Latin inscription (both with remainders of a gold intarsia) that reads \"GRATIS\" (translated into English as \"unselfish\"). A miniature (on ivory? on vellum?) with portrait of a noblewoman (royalty?) is set into the internal side of the lid. She is dressed according to the fashion of the 1st half of the 18th century. The box\'s underside is also decorated with ornamented horn relief on the outward. The miniature portrait shows an extremely high quality of work, and was without doubt painted by one of the recognized German court artists.
A similar box was offered in 20. sale Andreas Thies, Nuertingen (Germany) on 14 December 2002 (see our additional image).
Condition: good; horn relief is slightly chipped on bottom; miniture has not been inspected outside of the frame; glass is somewhat dirty from the inside.
