You are offerding on an original and iconic Stereoview photograph of the 1905 inaugural parade for President Teddy Roosevelt. This extraordinary image shows Chiricahua Apache leader Geronimo, flanked by Blackfeet Chief, Little Plume (third from left), Oglala Chief, American Horse (second from left), Ute leader, Buckskin Charlie (far left) and Brule Lakota leader, Hollow Horn, to the right of Geronimo. Comanche Chief, Quanah Parker also attended the inauguration and marched in the parade.
Being invited to the President\'s inauguration ceremony represented a great honor and respect bestowed upon these leaders by both Roosevelt and the U.S. Government. However, the most unusual element of this wonderful image is that Geronimo was a federal prisoner of the United States at the time. History would show that he spent the rest of his life in captivity. He died in 1909 in Fort Sill Oklahoma, while still a prisoner.
Lots of fascinating and ironic back stories to this event, including (1) the fact that one of the honored guests of President Roosevelt, Geronimo, had to be escorted to the event by armed guards to protect the guests from him. Probably a first in history... (2) He had just arrived in Washington DC from the Carlisle Indian School, where he had also been invited to speak to a gathering of children, themselves prisoners of a sort. Among his words to them were \"I feel good now as I stand before you. Obey all orders, do as you are told all the time, and you won\'t get hungry.\"
This 110 year old curved Stereoview card was manufactured and published by Keystone View Company and is copyright by B. L. Singley & Company. The caption below the image reads: \"13250-Indian Chiefs Headed by Geronimo, Passing in Review before President Roosevelt, Inauguration Day 1905. Washington DC, U.S.A.\" It is in excellent condition. Important image!
It is GUARANTEED to be a vintage photograph and not a reproduction or later copy... Buy with confidence...
