This sale is for agiant example of a highly pyritised ammonite fossilof the species Oxynoticeras lymensefrom the world famous Jurassic Coast beach of Charmouth, Dorset UK.

The fossil measures a whopping 150 mm (5.9 inches) across which is about as big as this species gets, they are very rarely found at this size and quality. The ammonite is nicely preserved with some exceptional detail in the ribbing, sutures and sharp keel. This is the largest I have ever found, and is incredibly impressive in the hand. The internal chambers and partially filled with crystalline calcite and some are crushed. The whole piece weighs 600 grams. The golden colour and shine is beautiful. A great example of the species and the biggest you are likely to find for sale for a long time. These ammonites are becoming harder to find these days. This is a beautiful example and a real one off which is important for the serious ammonite collector.

Around 196 million years old (Sinemurian, Early Jurassic), this fossil would make a wonderful addition to any collection.

Pyrite is a form of iron which sometimes occurs as a replacement mineral during the fossilisation process, depending on conditions in the sediment at the time in which the process takes place as well as the composition of the creature being preserved. It has the appearence of gold which is why it is commonly known as \'fool\'s gold\'. Pyrite ammonites only occur in very specific and limited locations around the world and ones from Charmouth are just about the most famous of the lot.
