French artist Gustave Doré (1832-1883) produced hundreds of quality Bible story illustrations in his lifetime. These illustrations were used in Bibles of many languages in Nineteenth Century Europe and later in the Americas. Many masters produced such artwork for illustrating Biblical themes, and Doré was among the most famous of them. Doré\'s realistic style breathed new life into these real stories. Centuries of mosaics, frescos, and stone reliefs, with their precise iconography, along with wood block impressions (recall the ever present halos on particular subjects) had caricaturized many Bible stories in the minds of believers. But his persons and places look real. Gustave Doré\'s work (and artistic license) was criticized by some in his own day, but these illustrations stand the test of time as good physical representations of important Biblical events. Paul Gustave Doré (French January 6, 1832 – January 23, 1883) was a French artist, engraver, illustrator and sculptor. Doré worked primarily with wood engraving. The Bible (from Koine Greek τὰ βιβλία, tà biblía, \"the books\") is a canonical collection of texts considered sacred in Judaism or Christianity. Different religious groups include different books within their canons, in different orders, and sometimes divide or combine books, or incorporate additional material into canonical books. Christian Bibles range from the sixty-six books of the Protestant canon to the eighty-one books of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church canon. The Hebrew Bible, or Tanakh, contains twenty-four books divided into three parts: the five books of the Torah (\"teaching\" or \"law\"), the Nevi\'im (\"prophets\"), and the Ketuvim (\"writings\"). The first part of Christian Bibles is the Old Testament, which contains, at minimum, the twenty-four books of the Hebrew Bible divided into thirty-nine books and ordered differently than the Hebrew Bible. The Catholic Church and Eastern Christian churches also hold certain deuterocanonical books and passages to be part of the Old Testament canon. The second part is the New Testament, containing twenty-seven books: the four Canonical gospels, Acts of the Apostles, twenty-one Epistles or letters, and the Book of Revelation. By the 2nd century BCE Jewish groups had called the Bible books \"holy,\" and Christians now commonly call the Old and New Testaments of the Christian Bible \"The Holy Bible\" (τὰ βιβλία τὰ ἅγια, tà biblía tà ágia) or \"the Holy Scriptures\" (η Αγία Γραφή, e Agía Graphḗ). Many Christians consider the whole canonical text of the Bible to be divinely inspired. The oldest surviving complete Christian Bibles are Greek manuscripts from the 4th century. The oldest Tanakh manuscript in Hebrew and Aramaic dates to the 10th century CE, but an early 4th-century Septuagint translation is found in the Codex Vaticanus. The Bible was divided into chapters in the 13th century by Stephen Langton and into verses in the 16th century by French printer Robert Estienne and is now usually cited by book, chapter, and verse. The Bible has estimated annual sales of 25 million copies, and has been a major influence on literature and history, especially in the West where it was the first mass printed book. The IsraelDefense Forces (IDF; Hebrew: צְבָאהַהֲגָנָה לְיִשְׂרָאֵTzva HahaganaLeYisra\'el\"The Army of Defensefor Israel\"; Arabic: جيش الدفاعالإسرائيلي‎ Jaysh ad-Difāʻ al-Isrāʼīlī), commonly known inIsrael by the Hebrew acronym Tzahal (צה\"ל), are the military forces of the State ofIsrael. They consist of the ground forces, air force, and navy. It is the solemilitary wing of the Israeli security forces, and has no civilian jurisdictionwithin Israel. The IDF is headed by its Chief of General Staff, the Ramatkal, subordinate to the Defense Minister of Israel; Rav Aluf Benny Gantz has servedas Chief of Staff since 2011. An order from Defense Minister David Ben-Gurionon 26 May 1948, officially set up the Israel Defense Forces as a conscript armyformed out of the paramilitary group Haganah, incorporating the militant groupsIrgun and Lehi. The IDF served as Israel\'s armed forces in all the country\'smajor military operations—including the 1948 War of Independence, 1951–1956Retribution operations, 1956 Sinai War, 1964–1967 War over Water, 1967 Six-DayWar, 1967–1970 War of Attrition, 1968 Battle of Karameh, 1973 Operation Springof Youth, 1973 Yom Kippur War, 1976 Operation Entebbe, 1978 Operation Litani1982 Lebanon War 1982–2000 South Lebanon conflict, 1987–1993 First Intifada,2000–2005 Second Intifada, 2002 Operation Defensive Shield, 2006 Lebanon War,2008–2009 Gaza War, 2012 Operation Pillar of Defense, and others. The number ofwars and border conflicts in which IDF was involved in its short history, makesit one of the most battle-trained armed forces in the world. While originallythe IDF operated on three fronts—against Lebanon and Syria in the north, Jordanand Iraq in the east, and Egypt in the south—after the 1979 Egyptian–Israeli PeaceTreaty, it has concentrated its activities in southern Lebanon and thePalestinian Territories, including the First and the Second Intifada. TheIsrael Defense Forces differs from most armed forces in the world in many ways.Differences include the conscription of women and its structure, whichemphasizes close relations between the army, navy, and air force. Since itsfounding, the IDF has been specifically designed to match Israel\'s uniquesecurity situation. The IDF is one of Israeli society\'s most prominentinstitutions, influencing the country\'s economy, culture and political scene. In 1965, the Israel Defense Forces was awarded the Israel Prize for itscontribution to education. The IDF uses several technologies developed inIsrael, many of them made specifically to match the IDF\'s needs, such as theMerkava main battle tank, high tech weapons systems, the Iron Dome, Trophycountermeasure, and the Galil and Tavor assault rifles. The Uzi submachine gunwas invented in Israel and used by the IDF until December 2003, ending aservice that began in 1954. Following 1967, the IDF has had close militaryrelations with the United States, including development cooperation, such as onthe F-15I jet, THEL laser defense system, and the Arrow missile defense system.
