RARE JUDAICA SPANISH TRANSLATION, Gibraltarian Rabbinic, work in spanish. Conforms to the uniquely Sephardic Rabbini genre, whereby the laws (hakachtoth) are arranged in Hebrew alphabetical order.Last copy was sold at sale in June 2012 , estimated Hamuy and Israel Gabay resided in the British possession f Gibraltar. Hamuy writes in his Preface that the book\'s title \"Gabar Israel\", by metathesis comes out to read \"Gibraltar\" [p.vi]. This explains the fact that the work was printed nearby at La Linea, the spanish town abutting the frontier with Gibraltar. In his translator\'s prologue, Gabay explains that he was forced to transliterate the Hebrew words into Roman characters, as the La Linea press lacked Hebrew type [p.xi].
R. Abraham Shalom Hamuy (or Hamway) (1839-88), a native of Aleppo, travelled in the course of his life from India to the East, to Gibraltar in the West, consulting local dcholarly librairies and publishing sacred works along the way. His hebrew works are graced by the Approbations of the great luminaries, such as R. Chaim Palache of Izmir, the Rishon LeZion, R. Abraham Ashkenazi; and R. Suleiman Mani, Av-Beth-Din of Hebron. Many of Hamuy\'s works abound in seguloth and he was venerated in certain communities as a miracle-worker.
One of the most colourful rabbinicfigures of the 19th century, he was active in many countries - Italy , France, Morocco and in the West, from Iraq to India, in the East. He wrote over fifty works, spanning a wide range of topics and to date, fifteen of these works have been published. His writings deal with rabbinic subjects such as jewish law, ethics and homilies, as well as general history, geography, mysticism, magic and folk medecine. Rabbi Hamuy was also known as an activefolk healer. Thanks to his Talmudic erudition and scholarship, and his charismatic personality, he was revered by many. However, his strong character and harsh statements against thers, including prominent rabbis of the time, often distanced himfrom social andcommunal affairs.
