You are offerding on aHummel #353 / 0 \"SPRING DANCE\". It stands 5 1/2\" tall, bears the original name label, is marked with the TMK 6 Goebel symbol (used between 1979-1991), is initialed bythe artist who painted them in 1979, and come in the original box withthe original shelf tag.
The Hummel has no chips,cracks, or repairs and the colors are vibrant and unfaded. There is some light crazing of the glaze on the bottom edges and underside of the base, on the white glaze under the skirts, a tiny, nearly invisible amount on the two highest arms and a very light one on the side of one of the shorter girls face. (See close up photos).
This Hummel belonged to my aunt, It wasdisplayed in a glass display case until her death in 2008 and has been packedaway in the original box ever since. The box is in good shape with no brokencorners or tabs and no tape residue.
Though this particularfigurine was decorated in 1976, the #353 / 0 Hummel was originally released to the US Market in 1964 in two sizes, the 5 1/4\" and the 6 3/4\" (353 / I) and both were incised with the copyright date of 1963. Though the 353/0 went out of production for some years, it was released again under both the TMK 5 and TMK6 trademarks and remained in production through to the closing of the Goebel company in 2008.

All M. I. Hummelfigurines are based on the two dimensional drawings of Sister Maria InnocentiaHummel (born Berta Hummel, b. 1909, d. 1946), a Franciscan Sister at theSiessen Convent in Saulgau, located in the southwestern part of Germany. As ayoung woman Berta Hummel was a talented artist. She would eventually study artat the Acadamy of Art in Munich, Germany, before studying to be a teacher ofart and joining the Order of St. Francis as a nun. Already an accomplishedartist, Franz Goebel first saw the drawings of M. I. Hummel in 1934 and soughtthe permission of the artist and her convent to recreate the drawings in threedimensional sculpture. The production of these figurines helped to save theGoebel company (founded by Franz Goebel) both before and after the events ofWWII, and the liscensing fees helped to fund the school and other good works ofthe Convent, as they still do today.
During the years of theThird Reich under Adolf Hitler, Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel\'s drawings,published in card and book forms, helped to lift the spirits of many ordinaryGermans living under a terrifying regime. The children\'s mischevious naturesand sweet, sweet faces could not help but to bring a smile. Her artworkbased figurines have the same power today. Sadly, during the war years of severefood and fuel shortages, Sister M. I. Hummel\'s resistance was depleted and shecontracted tuburculosis. Though she would rally several times the diseaseclaimed her life on November 6, 1946. She was just 37 years old. Thoughher life was short, her enduring legacy is the large collection of drawings andsketches she made. To this day, all new designs must be approved by the SiessenConvent, and bear the signature of M.I. Hummel. When and how many figurines arereleased is in the hands of the Goebel company and remains a companysecret.
It has been verydifficult for me to come to the decision of finally selling the collection Iinherited. My Aunt collected them because she loved children and couldn\'t haveany of her own, so they held a special place in her life. I simply don\'t havethe room to keep them. In studying Hummels in preparation for sale I neverexpected that I would fall in love with them; Not only the figurines, but thestories of how they came to be, especially as described in the several bookswritten by Robert L. Miller and Eric Ehrmann, who have compiled completecollector\'s guides and illustrated references, and from whom I learned much ofthe information located above. Still and all, they must go and I hope to findgood and loving homes for each and every one of them. Perhaps with you?
