Intricately hand crafted, this decorative Italian and cat tarot haired harlequin joker King and Queen mask is hand painted in glossy creamy white, ruby red and gold leaf. The King\'s eyes are encircled with Cat Tarot cards and the Queen\'s with different Italian oracle cards, all outlined in raised gold, and the center split faces are accented with lots of raised gold curls. The beautiful tragic Queen has a half gold, half ruby red mouth outlined in gold and the comedic King has a smiling all gold mouth outlined in white.

The Queen\'s hair is printed with Italian Oracle tarot cards and Medusa curled with gold satin center braid on the edges of each curl, the King\'s hair is made of the Major Arcana deck of Il Gatti by Menegazzi (a limited edition of 2000 originally published in 1990 by Il Meneghellois) in round curls--both feature faux pearls and gold bells at each point. Gold looping braid covers the edge of the mask and wide openwork gold twisting vine braid extends from gold art deco broaches with gold and red round stones at the centers of the faces along the curves of the forehead. The mask has a large black satin loop attached for wall hanging and the wax seal original stamp is impressed on the inside of the mask along with the La Gioia authentication and the maskmaker\'s silver initial.

The Mascareri of Venice formed their own guild in 1436, creating the masks worn by the celebrators of il Carnevale di Venezia, which ran from December 26th until Shrove Tuesday. Many patterned after the cast of the Commedia dell\'Arte and often worn year round, masks were considered to be the safest hiding place, a place where noone would know who you were and anything could be done!
