Good Quality Antique IraqiSolid Silver & Niello Box.
Skillfully hand made by Mandean silversmiths, probably within an area centred on Amarah in Iraq in around 1930. The third photo shows the silversmiths at work at that time. This one is signed by the maker who has left his signature in niello.
Depicted on the lid is a fine Nielloed scene of date palms with a sailing boat on the river Euphrates and a grand Mosque on the far shore. The box is octagonal and on each of the eight sides is a fine nielloed scene relating to old Iraq; There are the amazing reed buildings of the southern marsh arabs, camels, sailing boats and other river craft, date palms, reed beds and a Mosque.
Extremely well made, tactile and beautifully proportioned, it stands on 4 legs and has a width of 73mm between parallel sides and a height of 51mm.
It is made from a thick gauge of solid silver and is heavy at 110g or 3.9oz.
