The Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company Ltd was established in 1880 by William Gibson (1838-1913) and John Lawrence Langman (1846-1928) and was housed at 112 Regent Street, London, on the corner with Glasshouse Street, where they traded as Manufacturing Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Ltd. Both Gibson and Langman had their marks registered at both the London and Sheffield Assay Offices. In 1889 they acquired Mappin Brothers and in 1893 the firm absorbed The Goldsmiths’ Alliance Ltd. It was in 1898 that they became The Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company Ltd, active as jewelers, dealers of diamonds and precious stones, silversmiths, electroplaters and watch and clock makers. In 1952, The Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company Ltd amalgamated with Garrard and Co. Ltd, the Crown Jewellers, a title which was bestowed on the company by Queen Victoria in 1843. In 1959, Mappin and Webb took over The Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company Ltd. The Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company Ltd participated in many national and international exhibitions, such as the Indian and Colonial Exhibition, London 1886; Paris, 1889 and 1900, where they won the Grand Prix and Gibson was made a chevalier of the Legion d’honneur; Chicago, 1893 and the Franco-British Exhibition, London 1908.
