Great letter datedWashington, D.C., May 21, 1861, written by Charles Hamilton of Company G, 1stMichigan Infantry.
Letter includes great content, including Washington being a great city, 40,000troops there, “preperation for distroying one another.” Mentions negroes in Maryland, gives farmingadvice, says “if I fall or never return I want you to give evry thing over toHarry please consul with him.” Alsodescribes the route the regiment took to get there, marched through Baltimorewith loaded muskets and fixed bayonets, only the second regiment to marchthrough since the Massachusetts regiment was fired on (Baltimore Riot of April19, 1861). Best that civilians kept still,as “every one of our men had the miney [minie] gun to fire on them.”
When I purchased this letter, it had been extensively “repaired” with some form of tape by a previousowner. Still readable and in goodcondition. Thanks for looking!
