Offered for sale by Caspar’s Place is a sterling silver tablespoon in “Grecian” introduced in 1862 by Henry Hebbard. The pattern is decorated with an elaborate devil’s mask and ram’s head.

Henry Hebbard was a leading New York City silversmith in his day, active from around 1835 or 1847 until 1869. He designed and produced for his own shop as well as for top retailers such as Tiffany. Whiting purchased many of Hebbard’s patents and dies and produced his designs with their own mark. Later Hebbard pieces that have the Whiting maker’s mark are less valuable. Apparently Hebbard held the patent to “Grecian,” originally making the pattern for his own shop, then for Tiffany, before selling the patent to Whiting who patented it themselves in 1882.

This spoon is marked with “STERLING” and “HH PATENT 1862.\" This HH retail mark is rare and more valued than Whiting’s mark or even Tiffany’s mark on Hebbard pieces.

The spoon is monogrammed with \"MMC.” It is in fair estate condition. In addition tothe patina of fine scratches to be expected with age and use, there is extensive whitish discoloration which is probably due to the removal of old tarnish. Price reflects the condition of the piece. This interesting tablespoon will still make a lovely addition to any silver collection.

The spoon weighs approximately 2.12 troy ounces. It is roughly 8.5” long and 1.75\"wide across the bowl.
