Attic Red-Figure Amphora.
A small Attic Red-Figure Amphora with twisted handles, dating to the mature classical period c.450
to 420BC, for the almost exact form see, Schefold, K. Art of the world VOL XXIII, Classical
Greece, Methuen, London 1967, plate 27.The amphora measures 196 mm tall, 115 mm wide at the
girth, base 64mm diameter and rim 84mm diameter.Decorated in black slip with two scenes in red body colour reserve, fine painted black slip has been
used to pick out lines of musculature, clothing folds and other detail, a purple slip has also been
painted onto the figures as well as onto the base of the vessel in horizontal lines.
Decoration on two panels at the girth of the vessel:-
Side A.
A young, nude, male athlete is depicted in the act of throwing a discus, opposite him a cloth hangsfrom a purple painted hook, his hair is retained by a purple painted band.
Side B.
An older bearded man in a flowing himation holds a grounded staff and looks admiringly towards
the athlete, his longer hair is also retained with a purple painted band.
Decoration on the neck over each figure:- a pair of five leaved palmettes painted in reserve with
symmetrical flowing leaf volutes above each figure.A sandy soil matrix remains adhering to the underside and slight mineral (calcium salts?) staining is
visible over the black slip, all are presumed to be derived from the vessels burial conditions.Described and measured by Simon J N Tomson BA (Hons), Dip S M Arch, AifL.
