The holy, glorious, all-laudableApostle Nicanorof theSeventywas among the firstdeaconsin the Church along Nicholas. Although they died at various times and in various places, they are commemorated together onJuly 28. St. Nicanor is also commemorated onJanuary 4with theSynaxisof the 70 Holy Apostles.

In theActs of the Apostles(6:1-6) it is said that the twelveApostleschose seven men full of theHoly Spiritand wisdom, and appointed them to serve as deacons.
