Childs TransferwareTea Set

PUNCH & JUDY

Charles Allerton & Sons ~ Staffordshire England c1895

This is a stunning child\'s transferprinted toy tea set, circa 1895. Originally part of a complete children\'sminiature tea set, the serving pieces are melon shaped with scalloped rims. Thecolor is a true forest green.

The tea set includes:

·Teapot stands about 5-1/2 inches tall(firing separation inside spout)

·Sugar stands about 4-1/2 inches tall(chip inside lid)

·Creamer or milk just stands about3-1/2 inches tall

·Waste bowl, 2-1/2 inches tall, 4inches across top rim

·4 round cups, 2 inches tall (1 cuphas old crack & chip)

·6 saucers, 4-1/2 inches in diameter, and

·6 plates, 5-1/2 inches in diameter (1plate has non-penetrating line on back side)

The set features the fabulouscharacters from the Punchinella puppet show (dating back to Italy in the early17th century) of Mr Punch, Judy and Ragbaby, along with a fanciful pipe-smokingfrog. The images are repeated and wrap around the perimeter of the hollowpieces. These fanciful characters are surrounded by an aesthetic display offlowers and geometrical whimsies. The handles and lids have a geometricalborder trim that complements the central image.

The pattern name is \"Punch\". It was made byCharles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire regionof England who was well known for his whimsical children\'s tea sets. The set ismarked with the Allerton crown mark (dating to 1895-1905) and the pattern name.

The set is in overall great condition with only the minor damagedescribed above. The workmanship is haphazard, which is one of the reasons many people collect these sets...not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children and probably considereddisposable. The transfers are not always aligned neatly, and there is a firingseparation inside the teapot’s spout, stilt marks, runny glaze and little bumpsand dips and transfer wrinkles and glazed over edge crizzling original to themaking. The naïve and hasty style adds to the folksy charm. Offered as is, a colorful and playful rarity.

Antique English transferware in the Punch and Judypattern is quite scarce and highly sought after, and is getting harder to find, particularly in this great shade of bright green. This amusing tea set willmake a wonderful addition to your collection of children\'s dishes or anycollection of Punch and Judy, jester, puppetry or magical memorabilia.
